Grow Lexington!...Community  Garden Workshop

How to plant..how to grow…how to harvest…how to glean…how to compost

When:           Saturday  March 13  10am-2pm

During World Wars I & II, people planted vegetable gardens to help the war effort -Victory Gardens. It was a community effort, with people working in their own backyards or joining together in communal gardens.

Who should attend:

·    people are thinking about gardens because they're concerned about the origin of their food,

·    Folks who understand gardens are a tangible way to combat hunger in their own backyards.

·    Individuals who desire to work in a communal effort and share the fruits of their labors.

·    people rent want to manage their own plots within a garden.

·    Members of the faith community who want to begin Gardens of Eatin’

·    Agencies who want to offer the therapeutic experience of gardens to clients

·    Or citizens who simply want to get their hands dirty and caress the beautiful, voluptuous Mother Earth.

·    People who have been wondering about participating in a community project but know where to start.

Topics to be covered:

Ø Update on the community garden movement.

Ø Practical know-how for planning and organizing community and backyard gardens

Ø Basics such as using seeds or transplants and deciding on heirlooms or hybrids

Ø Soil types & fertility, testing and local sources, composting

Ø Trials and tribulations of individuals who have tried to start community gardens.

Ø  Local sources for funding, volunteer support and other garden needs
